We just love getting out and about

We just love getting let out of the run, and running free in the backyard. There are all sorts of adventures we can have, from digging up worms to just lounging about in the sun. So nice of someone to notice that we are internest savy chooks. We are kept pretty busy through the week, we lay three eggs a day, sort of like one hen has a rostered day off every third day. Our wonderful human is quite happy with our output and continues to feed us grains and fresh vegies and other tasty morsels.

Lots of clucks, Louise

New Year in the Hen House

Well folks we had a fabulous NY, all except for the fireworks, it scrambled our eggs. All that noise and nasty dogs barking. What is it with you humans.

Straight from the hens beak!!

Sally, Rosie, Louise and I are thrilled to bits to be living in such a nice house, instead of one of those batteries where most of our sisters have to live, enduring horrible conditions, being force fed, 24 hours a day of artificial light and nowhere to scratch. We have comfortable beds, a variety of food to eat and leisurely days and nights. We are so happy here we are all laying naturally and providing our wonderful human with lots of eggs, more than she can eat, so she is able to give them to neighbours and friends. Lots of clucks, Thelma Hen.

Hens love the strangest foods!!!

As well as being little kitchen tidies who will eat all sorts of scraps, hens also love watermelon. I bought a piece yesterday and they demolished it. They are now feeling well and truly at home in their new coop, they run to the gate when they hear the back door open (food, food, food, they cluck). I have also planted some silver beet which I am told they are extremely fond of, and the dark green vegies make for golden yolks.

Happy Hens Lay

Well the girls seem to be happy in their new home, they've laid a few eggs to prove it. So far they have made it through the nights, and seem comfortable in the coop.

We finished building our fox/cat/predator proof chicken coop over the Easter break. I bought the chooks a few days later, they are Brown Ilsa hens - because they will lay brown eggs - always tastier, or perhaps that's just in my mind. The girls are called, Sally, Rosy, Thelma and Louise - not that they care, they all answer to chook.

Their faviourite food is wholemeal spagetti (cooked) in worm size pieces and rolled in oat bran. The local green grocer gives me some scraps to satisfy their need for green vegies .... and they've laid a total of three eggs in four days.

Check with your local council before you get your hens, there can be some limits on numbers in the suburbs. Hens are usually okay, it's roosters that are the issue, not everyone likes to be woken up by a rooster crowing at the crack of dawn. They make great pets for the entire family, cost little to keep and are great fun. They are what I call ethical pets.
